Reason for the Season: Celebrating Love, Family, Fellowship & Food ✝️
🕊️ Mindful Inspiration: For unto us a Child is born, filling the world with God’s love.
Welcome back to the Refreshing the Joy of Parenting newsletter! 📰
And welcome back, December — wow, we’re wrapping up another year.
‘Tis the season of love, joy, and family time connection.
Christmas is family, beginning in our hearts, nurtured in our homes, carried by love, patience, and compassion to one another. As we celebrate Christmas with games, toys, gifts, and electronic devices…
Let us remember the reason for the season, our Savior was born.
And while the world feels murky… words become jaded, hearts feel heavy… and our personal worlds, irl and online, spin out in its “routine” noised distraction and frenzy — be it bells and whistles or another pile of seemingly ever-mounting devastation…
There is still hope.
Christ is, and reminds us, of said hope.
If you’re not a person of faith, we do hope you stay around. 🫶🏽
Take it away, Mom. ♥️
📌 Sorry for the delay! I (Naja) made my way back to Montréal to spend the holidays with my partner after several weeks visiting my mom, Ms. Gloria. We’ll be back to our routine schedule next edition. Thank you for your understanding!

The Greatest Gift of Christmas: What Our Savior Teaches Us
The Greatest Gift of Christmas is the Child born for us, bringing God’s love into our hearts and homes. As parents, we have the blessed opportunity to reflect that love in how we guide our children.
Christmas reminds us to nurture patience when they struggle, show compassion when they need comfort, and model faith through our words and actions.
By creating a home filled with love and understanding, we help our children experience the true spirit of Christmas not just as a season, but as a lifelong lesson in God’s grace and the power of family.
Remember, we are the mirror, we are the example. ❤️
🌱 Character Tree: Planting Character to Last a Lifetime
Love is Patient, Love is Kind
Have you ever been in a hurry, pressed for time, or rushing to get in and out of the grocery store? Well, I can only imagine that’s become “our norm”.
The Sunday before Thanksgiving, around 7 am, before church, I realized at the last minute I had to go back to the grocery store because... why? I forgot something.
When I pulled into the parking lot, I found a spot right near the entrance. Woo-wee, favor was on my side! I quickly made a beeline in and out of the aisles, gathering my last groceries, then whizzed back outside to my car.
As I walked to my car, I noticed a caravan of shopping carts parked directly behind my car, blocking me from getting out. I looked around for the store employee, and there he was, oblivious to this situation of mine.
Immediately, I felt that ping of frustration. This young man was dutifully doing his job, walking around getting more carts.
So, I sat in my car with the door open, hoping he would see me, but instead a wave of patience and calm overcame me. In this sweet, endearing moment, I saw an impressionable young man doing a great job dedicated to the value of service.
I waited patiently and smiled to myself, experiencing the unexpected joy of compassion, love, and humility.
Ten minutes passed, and then I noticed the caravan of shopping carts slowly moving, the young man guiding and pushing them forward.
We made eye contact, and I smiled, thanking him. He nodded and thanked me. I was able to drive off and attend church on time.
That early-morning rush became a quiet reminder that life’s most gentle lessons often arrive in unexpected pauses… Those moments when we are made to slow down, look up, and appreciate the hidden gifts right in front of us.

The Gift of Presence & Play This Holiday Season
As the holiday season approaches, brightly wrapped gifts and colorful toys catch our children’s eyes. The sights, sounds, and joys of Christmas fill our homes, but the most powerful gift we can give them is our time, love, and attention.
Parent-Child Interaction: The Heart of Development ♾️
Children learn language, empathy, and patience as they explore the world alongside us. When we engage with our children, we nurture cognitive, emotional, and social growth, aka their brain development.
These moments create memories, strengthen bonds, and provide a foundation of security that lasts far beyond the holiday season.
The Best Gift This Christmas: Play + Presence 🧸
Whether building a Christmas village, telling stories, or simply exploring toys together, engaging with your child during play gives them the best of both worlds: learning, imagination, and the warmth of family connection.
More, not only do these parent-child interactions develop your child’s language skills, emotional security, social awareness, and moral values, but they are “mini moments” that create (and reinforce) strong bonds and help children feel confident and loved.
Even independent play becomes more meaningful when children have experienced warmth and guidance from parents, as toys spark imagination, problem-solving, and motor skills, fostering creativity, autonomy, and focus, be it building, crafting, or exploring.
🫶🏽 Parent Tip: Set aside a few daily minutes of unplugged, intentional play. Laugh, explore, and connect. The memories (and the lessons imparted through kindness, patience, and curiosity) are gifts that last a lifetime and will be valued as such.
🍽️ Dinnertime is Familytime
Family dinner isn’t just a meal; it’s a designated time to connect as a family through conversation, good eats, and memories in the making. Kids and teens alike thrive with family time and dinnertime — bonds grow, brains develop, and everyone leaves the table feeling loved and valued. 🥰
This extends to you, too, Mom and Dad. 💞
Dinner is also the perfect opportunity to bring your kids into your cooking routine, not only to equip them with the life skills they’ll eventually need once they leave the nest, but also to give them an appreciation (recognize the fullness) of your daily efforts, keeping them loved, fed, and looked after.
So, what’s for dinner? 😋
Ms. Gloria’s “Mmm… SO Good Carrot Cake” Family Tradition Recipe 🤤
My family has a traditional family recipe that just feels like the holidays. For us, it’s my special treat made with love and baked from scratch, “Mmmm… So Good Carrot Cake.” 🤤
Warm spices, grated carrots, and that creamy frosting come together to create a dessert that tastes like comfort and brings back memories of gatherings, laughter, and second helpings.
There’s something about a homemade carrot cake that feels like a hug from the kitchen. Whether you serve it after a big meal or sneak a slice with your morning coffee, this cake has a way of making the moment feel special.
My children and family have cherished it from one season to the next.
May it bring joy to your table, too.
Enjoy!

Holiday Self-Care: The 5–Minute Reset ❄️
While the end-of-year holidays (October to December) bring festive joy and seasonal sparkle✨, between school events, holiday shopping, meal prep, visiting family, and, of course, work, parents often end up running on empty by December… with plenty more to-dos cue Christmas season (and up next), New Year’s.
But, here’s the truth: your presence, not perfection, is what your children remember most.
This year, choose a gentler holiday pace. Personally, I love the 5-minute reset. It’s easy, doable, realistic self-care you can actually fit into your day — and I can feel a difference, relaxed.
You don’t need an hour. Just take a 5-minute pause for:
Deep breaths with your eyes closed
A quick stretch
A drink of water or warm tea in silence
Stepping outside for fresh air
Because taking care of you is taking care of your family.
